This film returns to Danny, one of our four heroes from the Parting Glass, who has moved to America to take over his father’s traditional Irish bar. Here, his customers are his friends, and they are representative of the rich cultural diversity of modern New York. 

Our whiskey is made to be shared in moments like these, when friends come together to tell stories, sing a song or just share good company. “No Irish Need Apply” refers to a sign once common across 19th century America. At that time Tullamore D.E.W. was growing by exporting our whiskey to markets where those Irish emigrants were proudly adding to the cultural blend. Inspired by this history, with the Beauty of Blend we are providing a poignant but playful reflection on the positive impact that diversity and social inclusion make to the world around us.

NO IRISH NEED APPLY

Blend makes the world a more interesting, eclectic place. For generations, Ireland’s diaspora of 80 million people has built and blended around the world.

The United States has been a place of welcome and opportunity for many Irish people but there has also been evidence of prejudice and discrimination against the Irish. ‘No Irish Need Apply’ was a phrase that was added to job advertisements over a substantial period of United States history, most notably the middle of the 19th century. 

The New York Times proved definitively that the phrase ‘No Irish Need Apply’ was in widespread use in the middle of the 19th century in the United States. The newspaper identified at least 29 examples of the phrase in its classified advertisements.  

Despite this, the Irish have always had a special relationship with America at all levels of society; they dug the canals and turned rubble into railroads. They created new and exciting things wherever they went, inventing tap dancing in mid-19th century New York when they mixed their Irish dancing with the traditional dance of West African immigrants. The Irish became poets, painters and presidents. In fact, 22 Presidents have had Irish roots and the White House was designed and built by an Irishman, James Hoban, modelled on Leinster House in Dublin.

In this film, our hero Danny, for whom immigration and diversity are personally relevant, pauses from his work to reflect on the positive role immigrants have played in American society.
